Neoregelia magnifica

Common Names Magnificent Neoregelia, Blushing Tank Bromeliad

Zones 10A–11

A striking species native to southeastern Brazil, Neoregelia magnifica lives up to its name with a broad, symmetrical rosette and vivid central blush during bloom. Unlike many hybrids, this species maintains a clean green leaf base with subtle banding and a dramatic red flush in the center when flowering. Its tank-forming habit supports microfauna and makes it ideal for terrariums, amphibian habitats, and tropical displays.

Key Features

  • Growth Habit: Open rosette; solitary or slow clumper; epiphytic or terrestrial

  • Size: 16–20 in (41–51 cm) wide; 10–14 in (25–36 cm) tall

  • Leaves: Glossy green with faint banding; central blush deepens during bloom; smooth margins with fine spines

  • Flowers: Small, lavender-white; emerge from central tank during bloom phase

  • Fruit: Inconspicuous; not ornamental

  • Ecology: Tank-forming; supports frogs, snails, and beneficial insects; ideal for high-humidity environments

Growing Conditions

  • Light: Bright filtered light to partial sun; blush intensifies with exposure

  • Watering: Keep central cup filled with clean water; flush weekly; mist foliage in dry conditions

  • Soil: Loose, well-draining mix with bark, perlite, and sphagnum; suitable for mounting or containers

  • Temperature: 65–85°F (18–29°C); protect from frost

  • Humidity: High (60–90%)

  • Propagation: By offsets (“pups”) after flowering; detach when ½ to ¾ parent size

  • Tolerance: Heat and humidity tolerant; sensitive to stagnant water and poor drainage

Landscape Use Excellent for tropical beds, vivariums, and educational displays. Pairs well with Vriesea ospinae, Tillandsia fasciculata, and Neoregelia ‘Fireball’.
