Neoregelia ‘Gazpacho’

Common Names Gazpacho Bromeliad, Splotchy Torch

Zones 10A–11

A bold hybrid believed to be a cross between Neoregelia chlorosticta and ‘Fireball’, Neoregelia ‘Gazpacho’ is known for its intense red and green splotched foliage and vigorous growth. The leaves are long, stiff, and slightly recurved, forming a broad rosette that flushes deeper red under bright filtered light. Its dramatic patterning and fast offsetting habit make it ideal for massed displays, tree plantings, and vivarium use.

Key Features

  • Growth Habit: Broad rosette; fast clumper; terrestrial or epiphytic

  • Size: 12–14 in (30–36 cm) tall; 16–18 in (40–46 cm) wide

  • Leaves: Stiff, glossy green with irregular red splotches; slightly recurved; small spines

  • Flowers: Small, lavender-white; emerge from central tank during bloom phase

  • Fruit: Inconspicuous; not ornamental

  • Ecology: Tank-forming; supports frogs and microfauna in humid environments

Growing Conditions

  • Light: Bright filtered light to partial shade; best color in strong indirect light

  • Watering: Keep central cup filled with clean water; flush weekly; avoid stagnant water to prevent rot

  • Soil: Well-draining mix with bark, perlite, and sphagnum; suitable for mounting or containers

  • Temperature: 65–85°F (18–29°C); protect from frost

  • Humidity: Moderate to high (50–80%)

  • Propagation: By offsets (“pups”) after flowering; detach when ⅓ parent size

  • Tolerance: Heat and humidity tolerant; sensitive to overwatering and cold drafts

Landscape Use Excellent for tropical beds, tree branch plantings, and vivarium backgrounds. Pairs well with Neoregelia ‘Elwood’, Tillandsia ionantha, and Aechmea recurvata.
