Cryptanthus bivittatus (H.)

Common Names Earth Star, Dwarf Rose-Stripe Star, Starfish Plant

Zones 10A–12

A compact terrestrial bromeliad native to Brazil, Cryptanthus bivittatus is prized for its low, star-shaped rosette and vivid foliage. Leaf colors range from green and ivory to pink, red, and deep burgundy, often with striking central striping. Though its white flowers are small and short-lived, the plant’s sculptural form and color variation make it a standout in terrariums, dish gardens, and shaded tropical beds.

Key Features

  • Growth Habit: Flat rosette; terrestrial; slow clumper

  • Size: 6–12 in (15–30 cm) across; 3–6 in (8–15 cm) tall

  • Leaves: Strap-like, slightly spiny; colors vary by cultivar and light exposure—green, pink, red, ivory, or burgundy with central banding

  • Flowers: Small, white; bloom from center; not showy

  • Fruit: Inconspicuous; not ornamental

  • Ecology: Leaf bases retain moisture; supports microfauna in terrarium settings

Growing Conditions

  • Light: Bright indirect light; avoid direct sun to prevent leaf scorch

  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist; allow top inch to dry between waterings

  • Soil: Well-draining mix with perlite and orchid bark; prefers slightly acidic pH

  • Temperature: 60–80°F (15–27°C); protect from frost

  • Humidity: High humidity preferred; ideal for terrariums or humidity trays

  • Propagation: By offsets (“pups”) once they reach ⅓ the size of the parent plant

  • Tolerance: Low drought tolerance; sensitive to overwatering and low humidity

Landscape Use Ideal for terrariums, dish gardens, and shaded tropical beds. Pairs well with Fittonia albivenis, Peperomia caperata, and Neoregelia ‘Fireball’.
